Elected State Representatives receive a notice shortly after the general election from their respective caucus. In our case, this would be from the House Democratic Caucus. The notice will specify a date shortly after the election for the caucus to meet. At this caucus, an election for the Democratic Nominees for Speaker of the House, NH House Clerk and Sergeant-at-Arms will take place. In November of 2018, the Democratic Caucus occurred in Representatives Hall at the State House in Concord.

In addition, orientation dates are specified by the current Speaker of the House for newly elected members in the notice received. In November of 2018, the orientation was over a period of three consecutive days.

We are also asked by our caucus what our House Committee assignment preferences are shortly after the election. We submit our preferences to New Hampshire House Democratic Office. Typically, especially newly elected, representatives are assigned to a single standing committee. A list of current standing committees are at: http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/house/committees/standingcommittees.aspx . If you click on the title of a standing committee, you will see a list of the current members. After we have been assigned to a committee, we attend an orientation meeting.

Elected New Hampshire State Representatives assume office as defined by the New Hampshire State Constitution, Part 2, Article 3 as duplicated below:

[Art.] 3. [General Court, When to Meet and Dissolve.] The senate and house shall assemble biennially on the first Wednesday of December for organizational purposes in even numbered years, and shall assemble annually on the first Wednesday following the first Tuesday in January, and at such other times as they may judge necessary; and shall dissolve and be dissolved at 12:01 A.M. on the first Wednesday of December in even numbered years and shall be styled THE GENERAL COURT OF NEW HAMPSHIRE.

Elected State Representatives’ Organizational Day will be December 2, 2020.

During Organizational Day, the NH House & Senate elected members are sworn in. In addition, the elections of the Speaker of the House, NH House Clerk, Sergeant-at-Arms, NH Secretary of State and NH Treasurer will take place.

The House will assemble on January 6, 2021. On the Thursday preceding a House session, a House Calendar is published to http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/house/caljourns/default.aspx . This calendar specifies the business to be taken up in the session. Journals of sessions are also published at the same location.

In addition to our duties as a NH House State Representative, we are also members of Hillsborough County Delegation. All Hillsborough County Delegation members meet during the second week of December 2020 for the Organization of County Delegation at the County Complex. During this organizational meeting, members of the Executive Committee including officers are elected. Minutes and details of the Hillsborough County Delegation are located at: http://hcnh.org/Delegation .

The above is a brief overview of the duties of State Representatives. There is much more to being a State Representative. All three of us running for office are current incumbents and will bring a wealth of experience to our positions when re-elected. Please support all three of us. We look forward to receiving your input.
